Brian Blessed played “Fancy” Smith in Z Cars. My nan told me that on her deathbed. It’s what Brian would have wanted.

When i were a mere whipper=snapper and we first got a b&w telly my heroes were Bugs Bunny and…wait for it…Fancy Smith. Amazing or Wow? If the Missus had not poisoned him he would have sorted out Caligula – d’ya reckon?

We couldn’t afford a telly. My dad used to put on “black face” and then sing a medley of hits from Showboat with his head framed by the serving hatch.
